Four Seasons Cottage

From early spring right through winter Four Seasons Cottage is nestled in a world of beauty and tranquility.

5s1ajpg.JPGSpring at Four Seasons Cottage reveals a garden lush with violets and other spring flowering groundcovers, lilacs, flowering crabapples and a serviceberry, bulbs of all kinds and the fresh green shoots of many perennials.

The front bed is coming into its own with the new leaves of hostas, a bleeding heart, spirea and a little red tulip. Elsewhere allium towers above new growth.

Early June is that beautiful transition period between spring and summer when the annual poppies are at their best along with the yellow (non-invasive) loosestrife and blue flax.

Mid-summer is the time the perennials show their best. A path through the garden gate takes us by purple coneflowers, veronica, shasta daisy and a dogwood bush and the lilies put on a wonderful display of colour. The old chicken coop makes a perfect garden shed.

Autumn is one of our favourite seasons as the evening light shines through the bunny grass and the spirea and Boston ivy show their fall colours. Throughout the garden the burgundies, purples and yellows of autumn are reflected in the sedums, asters and annual salvia.

dscf0016.JPGAnd to add a very special twist to this already interesting garden Sheila Sim and Marty Humphrey have put their imagination to work in creating a garden railroad … a miniature “G” Scale railroad that snakes its way through and around the garden bed.

Even as autumn gives way to Winter the structure of the garden with its split rail fencing and variety of evergreens continues to bring a sense of peace and tranquility as we wait for those first new shoots in spring.
