Mixed Border

The mixed border will contain, as its name suggests, a mixture of shrubs, perennials and annuals.  It will usually be situated in a relatively sunny site and is often quite large giving weight to the landscape.  To contruct a mixed border you’ll want to begin with your “anchor plants” those that are larger and more substantive and will serve to anchor the space.  Once you have those in place, look for perennials that will bloom in spring, summer and fall to fill in some of the spaces as well as annuals for colour and continuity.

Some good anchor plants in Eastern Ontario will include evergreen and deciduous shrubs and larger perennials such as:

Globe Blue Spruce - One of my favourite evergreens for its blue colour and tidy shape, the Globe Blue Spruce can grow to 3-4′ across and needs good sun to keep its colour.  It is seen here at the top of a rock garden.
